Posted by CR on behalf of member - 1 of 2 Its been two years since I joined Planet Fitness (PF) and still feel very satisfied with my membership at this club. One of the best benefits of having a PF (24/7) Black Card membership is the ability to workout at any Planet Fitness facility. The ability to not be confined to just one club has been of great importance to me because it allows me to juggle my daily activities more freely. However, there is one Planet Fitness (PF) gym I would not recommend to anyone. That PF is located at: Jacksonville (Orange Park),1980 Wells Rd, Orange Park, FL 32073 What I am about to relate occurred back in November 2021 (Black Friday) and it has taken me this long to share it with anyone because I did not want to rush to judgement or be carried away by my emotions. Here it goes: My husband and I were planning on having lunch at a Chinese Restaurant located at the Argyle Forest Orange Park Plaza located close to this gym, and since we still had about 30-40 minutes left before lunch, we decided to work out at that PF facility near that restaurant. I picked up my Yoga bag containing my towel, a pair of rubber gloves and two ankle straps (which I was planning to use on a certain machine) and proceeded to wipe-clean the first machine before using it. I was about to begin working out when a female staff attendant standing nearby said I could not keep my bag on the gym floor because it was "against their rules". At hearing this, I looked at her with surprise being that I had always taken my Yoga bag onto the gym floor at all the other PF facilities, and told her no one had ever said anything like that before, and I have been to most of the PF gyms throughout Jacksonville. She then signaled other staff personnel to come, telling them I was not complying with their rules. Before I realized it, I was surrounded by three black female staff members, (the scene reminded me of a not-so-pleasant experience back in high school making me feel almost like they were ganging up on me). The one person that appeared to be in charge (Ari) said she could keep it by the front desk for me or I could put my bag in a locker. I told her I needed it with me to do other workouts and she seemed annoyed, and pulled out her cell phone and began calling someone. I suppose the person on line with her was someone in a superior capacity to her; and it became apparent that whomever she was talking to, was telling her to get me out. She then proceeded to tell me so, adding that I belonged to another gym, the Promenade, and not this gym; and that, if I did not leave, she was going to call the police. I thought that was outrageous because my Black Card membership legally entitled me to go to any Planet Fitness facility, as per their own binding agreement. Weren't they violating our contract? To diffuse the situation I picked up my bag and walked away from them and went on to another machine located on the second floor. (The machine where I need to use my ankle straps.) Shortly afterwards Ari followed me there, putting her phone about two feet away from my face, while again threatening me with calling the Police, saying she was giving me another opportunity to leave before the Police arrived. I told myself I had not done anything wrong so there was no reason to be afraid. However, she insisted that I belonged to the PF Promenade, not their facility, to which I replied that it was not so. (When I signed up with PF I did it precisely because it offered me the freedom to go to any of their gyms, even though I could have just paid a lower monthly fee and thus "belong" to just only one specific gym. And, yes, I've been to the Promenade, as well as to many other PF gyms. If I were to consider myself "belonging" to a particular PF gym, I would've chosen the one closest to me which is about three blocks away from home.) I began my workout; and after about 20-25 minutes, my husband and I decided it was time for lunch and walked down to the exit door on the main floor, at which point a policeman was waiting there by the front desk. Ari and him were looking directly at me so I approached the desk and he invited me to walk outside the building and talk, which we did. As we were walking out, I could feel the looks of other gym members on us! I asked myself: why did they need to call the police -- do they want him to take me to jail? I couldn't believe this was happening! The policeman identified himself as R. Jenkins 7401. I told him the whole ordeal was about my gym bag, that I had done nothing wrong and that I had never been told or heard about that particular "rule". He seemed sympathetic but, to my surprise, added that he was told I was to never return to this or any of their gyms; namely, Fleming Island, 103 St., and Wells Road! Apparently, all owned by the same person (whoever that may be). |
