This district is located in the Central Valley of California (Bakersfield, Cerro Coso, and Porterville colleges). In August it was announced that ALL employees and students had to be vaccinated by Nov. 1. Masks were required for all as soon as exiting a vehicle, even otutside. An app was created to use on our phones to do a temperature check and receive a green pass for the day. Faculty were to check student phones every day before allowing students to enter classrooms for the day. If faculty were not vaccinated, they were required to get tested each week. I refused vaccination, never used the app and wore a mask sparingly. My religious exemption was accepted. As Nov. 1 approached, unvaccinated students were terrified. They had already completed 10 weeks of class and were now not being allowed to complete the semester. For personal reasons, I was allowed to move my classes online for the last 6 weeks of the semester. Some of my students stated they would not return for spring semester or were transferring to other colleges. Any student not vaccinated was only allowed to register for online classes. Enrollment is down tremendously and the administration thinks the faculty should be concerned about the problem they created. On Nov. 1, a Gestapo-like group (trained employees and students) were placed around campuses at strategical entrances where students were most likely to enter. Faculty were left alone. If students had not entered their vaccine passport on the app, they were not allowed on campus. This spring the campuses started online for the first 4 weeks. Beginning the 5th week with all attending students vaccinated, I went back to campus and never tested. I asked HR for a guarantee that the testing swabs did not contain any chemical or the vaccination. The district office ignored it, Porterville College VP said they were just doing what the district required and would forward to the president. She ignored my request for information. I had made previous requests regarding masks and vaccinations but was ignored. The end of the 6th week, HR finally caught up with me. I took my classes online in spite of the fact that those students had requested a face-to-face class. It is common knowledge among the employees of the colleges that the chancellor of the district had an agreement with Rudy Salas, a state representative, to get the campuses vaccinated and the district would receive a monetary reward. It is believed it was around $5 million but not sure where the money went. The district was not 100% vaccinated as she claimed in a webinar. One member of the Board of Trustees stated when asked that there was no plan to stop the vaccine mandate but when challenged stated he believed it was their job to help the state of California get vaccinated. Funny but I don't remember that being a responsibility of the Board members. The union president helped create an MOU with the district which is in effect until August 5, 2022. Many faculty were not informed or made aware of this until the deal was completed. Even though the cases in California are way down there seems to be no attempt to rescind the MOU. Since it is California and most of the faculty and administration are communists, it will be interesting to see what ridiculous policies are put into place for fall semester. Many faculty are moving to other jobs or retiring. I could retire but my stubbornness tells me to stay and fight. The students need help. |
